Tacoma has a wonderful non-profit called Write253 that I’m lucky enough to volunteer with. They teach creative writing to South Sound high school students, and in turn have a teen literary magazine. The magazine, “Disclaimer“, not only publishes teen writing, but is edited by high school students as well.
I act as the magazines “prose mentor”, meaning I assist the editors in going through the slush pile and asking good questions. I barely do anything, these kids are unbelievably brilliant and thoughtful.
After every issue comes out, we do a podcast with the editors to discuss the issue, and invite the students who were published to read their work.
